Module 3 · Files, tools and your own data Lesson 10 of 15
Reusing one design across formats and your first script
The platform exposes its own automation and integration surface for templates and asset generation, but the practice worth learning here is the reuse loop: one canvas, one brand kit, every format. You do not need this to finish the course, and you do not need it for a fresher job either — but an afternoon here is what turns "I have used Canva" into "I have built with it", which is a different sentence in an interview.
The concept
The platform exposes its own automation and integration surface for templates and asset generation, but the practice worth learning here is the reuse loop: one canvas, one brand kit, every format. The idea is simple: the same model you have been chatting with also answers a web request, so you can put it inside a script, a spreadsheet or a page. A key identifies you; a request sends the text; a response comes back as data.
The reason to try it once, even if you never build anything: it makes the chat version less mysterious. You see that the whole conversation is text in and text out, that your instructions are literally lines of a request, and that "the model" is one parameter among several.
A first call looks like this:
# The reuse loop, which is the whole skill:
#
# 1. Design the hardest format first (usually the smallest, a story).
# 2. Add it to your brand kit, not to your downloads folder.
# 3. Resize from that canvas into every other format.
# 4. In each new size, fix exactly two things: the headline length and
# the image crop. Nothing else breaks.
# 5. Export at the platform's own pixel size, not a screenshot.
#
# A set designed this way takes 20 minutes. The same five posts designed
# separately take two hours and look like five different people made them.Common mistakes
The mistake is exporting a screenshot. Every platform has its own pixel size and aspect ratio, and a screenshot looks soft and slightly wrong on all of them.
Worked example
A weekly post series generated from one template and a spreadsheet of headlines is a realistic routine, and it is what social media roles do every Monday.
Your practice task
Get a key, run one request that works, and change one word in it to see the answer change. That is the whole of the first afternoon.
Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.
Key takeaway
The platform exposes its own automation and integration surface for templates and asset generation, but the practice worth learning here is the reuse loop: one canvas, one brand kit, every format.
