Module 1 · Foundations — what Grok is Lesson 1 of 15

Meet Grok — what it is and who makes it

Learning objective

Grok is xAI's assistant with live access to the X timeline and a deliberately blunt tone. It is at its best at what is happening right now — a live conversation, a breaking story, a reaction to something released this morning. It is at its weakest at being careful. It is blunt, it will joke when you wanted an answer, and its confidence is not a signal of accuracy — and knowing both halves is what separates somebody who uses it well from somebody who trusts it blindly.

The concept

Grok is a assistant with live access to the X timeline and a deliberately blunt tone made by xAI. The models behind it are the Grok family from xAI, with a fast version and a larger reasoning one. None of that matters on its own — what matters is that you know what kind of worker you have hired. At what is happening right now — a live conversation, a breaking story, a reaction to something released this morning is the job you hand it. At being careful. It is blunt, it will joke when you wanted an answer, and its confidence is not a signal of accuracy is the job you keep.

Most people come to a course like this expecting a list of magic words. There is no such list. What there is, is a tool that produces a direct, opinionated answer that reads like somebody who is not worried about your feelings, and produces it at a speed no human matches — which means the skill is not in writing the prompt, it is in knowing what a good answer looks like so you can tell the difference.

Here is the first thing to try, worded the way you will word things for the rest of the course:

Read the answer twice. The first read is for the content; the second is for the shape — did it answer the question you asked, or the question it found easiest? That second read is the habit this whole course is built on.

Prompt
Search what people are actually saying about entry-level AI jobs in India this month. Give me three criticisms and three reasons people are optimistic, with the posts behind each, and tell me what nobody is discussing.

Worked example

The last line is the useful one — the gap in a conversation is usually where the opportunity is.

Your practice task

Open Grok, ask it the one question you would normally put to a search engine about your own field, and write down two things: whether the answer was right, and whether it would have taken you longer to find it yourself.

Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.

Key takeaway

Grok is a assistant with live access to the X timeline and a deliberately blunt tone made by xAI.
