Module 2 · The interview conversation Lesson 5 of 15

The project story: problem, decision, result

Learning objective

Interviewers ask about your project to find out how you think, not what you built. Four beats: what problem, what you chose and why, what went wrong, what the result was.

Worked example

"The export had duplicate rows, so I deduplicated on order id after checking whether the duplicates were real or re-imports" is a decision. "I cleaned the data" is a summary, and it gives the interviewer nothing to ask about.

Your practice task

Write your best project as those four beats on one page, then say it out loud in under two minutes without reading.

Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.

Key takeaway

Interviewers ask about your project to find out how you think, not what you built. Four beats: what problem, what you chose and why, what went wrong, what the result was.
