Module 2 · The interview conversation Lesson 6 of 15

Behavioural questions and the STAR shape

Learning objective

Situation, Task, Action, Result. Most candidates give the situation at length and never reach the result — which is the only part that answers the question.

Worked example

"Tell me about a time you worked in a team" answered with a named project, your specific contribution and what changed because of it. Vague stories about group assignments do not survive the follow-up question.

Your practice task

Prepare three real stories — teamwork, a conflict, a deadline — and check each one ends with a result you can state in one sentence.

Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.

Key takeaway

Situation, Task, Action, Result. Most candidates give the situation at length and never reach the result — which is the only part that answers the question.
