Style as a brief, and extending a track — Suno's own feature

Learning objective

The style box is a brief, and it takes far more than a genre: instrumentation, tempo, mood, vocal type, and what you do not want. Extending then turns a good thirty seconds into a track the length you actually need.

The concept

Because the difference between music that helps a video and music that ruins it is almost entirely in the brief. Nobody needs a hit song for a project demo; everybody needs a bed at the right tempo with no drums under the narration.

Write the style line as a specification: instrumentation, tempo, mood, vocal or instrumental, what to exclude, and how it should start and end. Generate three, keep one. Extend rather than regenerate when a section works, and always keep the style line saved with the file.

Here is the shape of it, in the form you will actually use:

Plain text
FOUR STYLE LINES, ONE PER JOB

1. BED UNDER A VOICEOVER
instrumental, 85 bpm, soft piano and pads, no drums, no vocals,
no melody above 500 Hz, starts immediately, no fade out

2. COLLEGE EVENT JINGLE
upbeat pop, 120 bpm, claps, bright synth, 15 seconds exactly,
big finish on the last beat

3. STUDY TIMER LOOP
lo-fi instrumental, 70 bpm, vinyl noise, no vocals, 25 minutes,
   no sudden changes of section

4. PRODUCT DEMO
minimal electronic, 100 bpm, single repeating motif, no vocals,
quiet throughout, ends on an unresolved chord

SAVE EVERY ONE OF THESE. They are reusable briefs, and a saved brief is
worth more than a saved track.

Common mistakes

The mistake is publishing a track before checking the licence attached to your plan. Generated music has usage terms, and a track on a monetised channel is commercial use.

Worked example

A thirty-second clip you liked becomes a two-minute piece by extending it, with the same instruments and the same feel throughout.

Your practice task

Take one clip you like, extend it to two minutes, and put it under a real video. Then write down the exact style line you used — it is your reusable brief.

Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.

Key takeaway

Because the difference between music that helps a video and music that ruins it is almost entirely in the brief.
