Module 1 ยท The terminal, without fear Lesson 1 of 15
Files, paths and permissions
A Linux path is either absolute from / or relative from where you are. Permissions are the three permissions of owner, group and others โ and most "permission denied" errors are fixed by understanding which one you are.
Worked example
chmod +x deploy.sh makes a script runnable; chmod 644 on a private key exposes it; sudo is not a fix for not knowing why the write failed.
Your practice task
Create a folder tree, move and rename files, make a script executable, and create a file whose owner cannot read it โ then explain to yourself why.
Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.
Key takeaway
A Linux path is either absolute from / or relative from where you are. Permissions are the three permissions of owner, group and others โ and most "permission denied" errors are fixed by understanding which one you are.
