Module 5 ยท Reliability and the public internet Lesson 15 of 15
Uptime checks, alerts and incidents
Monitoring is a check that runs on a timer and shouts when it fails. If nobody is told, there is no monitoring - and the first time you learn the site is down should not be from a customer.
Worked example
A cron job that fetches the health endpoint every five minutes and posts to a webhook when it fails turns a silent outage into a message you see.
Your practice task
Set up one uptime check against a health endpoint and a free alert channel, then take the app down to prove it fires.
Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.
Key takeaway
Monitoring is a check that runs on a timer and shouts when it fails. If nobody is told, there is no monitoring - and the first time you learn the site is down should not be from a customer.
