Module 3 ยท From question to insight Lesson 7 of 15

Turning a vague request into a runnable question

Learning objective

"Sales are down" is not a question. Which period, compared to what, which product lines, and what counts as a sale โ€” a good analyst writes those four decisions down before typing any SQL.

Worked example

"Sales are down" becomes: total amount per month for the last 12 months, split by region, excluding cancelled orders. Now a single query answers it.

Your practice task

Take three vague requests you have heard and write each as a precise set of columns, filters and a time window.

Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.

Key takeaway

"Sales are down" is not a question. Which period, compared to what, which product lines, and what counts as a sale โ€” a good analyst writes those four decisions down before typing any SQL.
