Module 4 ยท The portfolio case study Lesson 12 of 15
Where a fresher designer starts
Junior designer, UI designer and design intern roles exist in Indian product companies, agencies and studios โ and all of them interview on the portfolio, not on the degree.
The concept
Fresher design roles in India are mostly UI-heavy with an expectation of UX thinking: visual design for web and app, design-system upkeep, some flows and prototypes. Read five job descriptions this week, list the tools and tasks they name, and let that list โ not a course brochure โ decide what you practise next.
Make three portfolio pieces on real problems you can describe honestly: redesign a page you use and show the before, design something for a college club that actually gets used, and document one small research study with five participants. Real problems give you real constraints, and constraints are what interviewers question.
Read 5 real job descriptions. List the tools/tasks they name:
Figma . design-system upkeep . flows . prototypes . some research
Let that list decide what you practise next.
Three portfolio pieces:
1. Redesign a page you use (show before/after)
2. Design for a college club - and get it used
3. One small research study with 5 participantsCommon mistakes
The mistake is copying a popular app's screens pixel for pixel as your portfolio. It proves you can imitate, not decide anything. Take the same app but start from a real complaint people have about it, and your walkthrough instantly has something to say.
Worked example
A two-project case study with real testing behind it beats ten dribbble shots with no reasoning, in every interview loop.
Your practice task
Publish two case studies to a simple portfolio page and put the link at the top of your resume.
Do this before moving on. Reading a solution teaches the shape of it; typing it teaches you.
Key takeaway
Fresher design roles in India are mostly UI-heavy with an expectation of UX thinking: visual design for web and app, design-system upkeep, some flows and prototypes.
