What you will learn

  • Clean a real dataset in Excel: duplicates, blanks, inconsistent formats and text-vs-number traps
  • Build pivot tables and lookups that answer a question without rewriting the sheet every month
  • Write SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY and JOIN queries from memory, not by copying
  • Turn a vague request โ€” "why did sales drop?" โ€” into a precise query you can actually run
  • Design one dashboard that a manager reads in thirty seconds
  • Explain your numbers out loud: definitions, exclusions and the reason the number moved

Module 3From question to insight3 of 53 lessons

Weeks 6โ€“8 โ€” the part that separates an analyst from someone who can type a query. A manager asks for a number; you hand back the answer and the reason.

  1. Turning a vague request into a runnable question

"Sales are down" is not a question. Which period, compared to what, which product lines, and what counts as a sale โ€” a good analyst writes those four decisions down before typing any SQL.

Example "Sales are down" becomes: total amount per month for the last 12 months, split by region, excluding cancelled orders. Now a single query answers it.

Practice Take three vague requests you have heard and write each as a precise set of columns, filters and a time window.

  2. Sanity-checking your own numbers

A wrong number presented confidently is worse than no number. Row counts, totals and a second method for the same figure are how you catch it before your manager does.

Example If your monthly total is 10x the yearly total, the join multiplied the rows โ€” a duplicated key in one table, and a mistake that reaches a report once a week somewhere.

Practice For one of your queries, check the row count before and after the join and verify the total against the raw table.

  3. One dashboard, thirty seconds

A dashboard is an argument, not a data dump. If the reader needs a walkthrough, the layout is the problem.

Example Five numbers, one trend line and one breakdown answers almost every recurring question โ€” and every extra chart halves the chance the first one gets read.

Practice Build a one-screen dashboard for your dataset and ask someone to tell you the story in their own words without your help.

About Data Analytics with SQL & Excel

Take a messy spreadsheet or database export, clean it, answer a business question with a query, and present the answer โ€” in eight weeks.

BCom, BBA, BSc and engineering graduates, and anyone in an operations or support role who wants to move into analytics without a statistics degree.

What you will be able to do at the end

How the course is structured

3 modules and 9 lessons, arranged so each one ends with something you have built. Every lesson carries a worked example and a practice task โ€” the practice is the course, the reading is only the setup. Plan for 8 weeks ยท about 8 hours a week.

The full syllabus โ€” every lesson, its example and its practice task โ€” is in the Course curriculum below. Nothing is locked and nothing needs an account.

Your weekly routine

  • Three 2-hour sessions a week: 40 minutes reading, 80 minutes on your own data.
  • One hour a week writing up what a number means in two sentences โ€” the writing is the deliverable in real jobs.
  • Keep every query. A saved queries file becomes your interview answer bank.

What you will have built by the end

  • A cleaned dataset with the cleaning decisions documented
  • A SQL script that answers ten business questions in order
  • A one-screen dashboard a manager can read in thirty seconds

Where this leads for a fresher

  • Data analyst / business analyst (fresher)
  • MIS executive and reporting roles
  • Operations roles with a data component
  • Analyst internships that convert

Titles vary between companies; the evidence does not. A deployed project, a set of queries you can explain, or a case study with real testing behind it is what a fresher interview has to work with.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Python for a data analyst job?

Not to get in. SQL and Excel are in nearly every fresher analytics job description, and Python is usually listed as "good to have". Learn this first, then add Python โ€” that order gets you interviews sooner.

My maths is average. Is that a problem?

No. The maths in an analyst job is percentages, averages and comparisons. The harder part is judgement โ€” deciding which number answers the question โ€” and that is what this course trains.

Is this course free?

The lessons, examples and practice tasks are free, and the databases you will query need no paid licence.

Will this get me a job?

It gives you the two things that do: evidence you can work with real data, and the vocabulary to survive the interview. Take the free Career Pulse check to see how you score against the analyst roles you are targeting, and what to fix first.

Not sure which of these you need first? The free Career Pulse check scores your skills, communication and goal clarity in about three minutes and tells you which gap to close first. Take the free check.
