Module 4Paid campaigns and the honest report4 of 53 lessons

Weeks 5โ€“6 โ€” spending money small and reading the result. The skill most digital-marketing hires are actually testing for.

  1. Ads, budgets and the small-test habit

Run a small test before committing a budget: two audiences, one message, identical everything else. Spending is easy; knowing what worked is not.

    The lesson

Paid ads buy you information fast. Start with one campaign, one audience and one ad, on a budget small enough that losing it does not hurt โ€” โ‚น300 a day for a week tells you something real, and a fresh account rarely converts well in week one anyway.

One change at a time, then wait for the data. Audience, creative, headline, landing page โ€” change one, note the date, compare seven days later. Two changes at once and you cannot say which one moved the number, which is the entire value of running the test.

The mistake is boosting a post and calling it a campaign: no landing page, no conversion event, no way to know whether anyone did anything. Decide what counts as success before you spend, or the report at the end can only say "we got some reach".

    Plain text
    Test: 1 campaign . 1 audience . 1 ad . Rs.300/day for 7 days
Change ONE thing at a time. Note the date. Compare 7 days later.

Before you spend, decide what "success" means:
a real enquiry? a signup? a tool completion?

Example โ‚น500 on two ads with the same text and different images answers a real question. โ‚น10,000 on one ad answers nothing.

Practice Draft one small ad test with a fixed budget and a stated decision rule for what you will do with each result.

  2. Reading cost per click and conversion

Clicks are cheap and worthless on their own. Cost per SIGN-UP is the number that decides whether a campaign continues.

    The lesson

Three numbers tell you whether an ad works. CPC โ€” what a click cost. Conversion rate โ€” of 100 clicks, how many did the thing. Cost per conversion โ€” the spend divided by the conversions, which is the only number that compares against the value of what you are giving away.

Work backwards from the money: if a genuine enquiry is worth โ‚น500 to you, then 200 clicks at โ‚น10 with a 2 per cent conversion rate gives four enquiries at โ‚น500 โ€” exactly break-even, before any of the value of the fourth. If your ad is at โ‚น40 a click, it can only work with a much better conversion rate or a much better landing page.

The mistake is judging an ad by its click-through rate. A beautifully written ad that brings curious clicks and no conversions is worse than a plain one that brings fewer, better people. Judge by cost per conversion and by whether the person stayed.

    Plain text
    CPC Rs.10 . 200 clicks . 2% convert = 4 enquiries
    Cost per enquiry = (200 x 10) / 4 = Rs.500

If an enquiry is worth Rs.500, this breaks even - before its extra value.
At Rs.40/click you need a far better conversion rate or landing page.
Judge by cost per CONVERSION, not click-through rate.

Example 100 clicks at โ‚น5 with no sign-ups is โ‚น500 wasted; 20 clicks at โ‚น25 with 4 sign-ups is โ‚น125 per sign-up and worth scaling.

Practice Calculate cost per click and cost per conversion for your test, and write one sentence on whether you would scale it.

  3. The one-page report

Spend, results, cost per result, what you learned, what you would do next. One page, no dashboards, no vanity charts.

    The lesson

Your one-page ad report has five lines: spend, clicks, conversions, cost per conversion, and one sentence on what you would change next week. That is the whole document. Anybody can read it in thirty seconds and decide with you.

Screenshot the best and worst ad side by side, and keep a note of every test and its result so the second month starts from what you learned rather than from the beginning. This running log is also the portfolio piece that gets a fresher a marketing job โ€” it shows judgement, not tool knowledge.

The mistake is reporting only the campaigns that did well. The test that failed and the money it cost is the single most credible thing in a junior marketer's report, because it proves you were measuring rather than hoping.

    Plain text
    Spend Rs.2,100
    Clicks 210
    Conversions 4 (enquiries)
    Cost / conv. Rs.525
Next week: new landing page, same audience, same ad.

Keep a log of every test and its result - that log is the portfolio piece.

Example A four-line report plus one honest failed test is a stronger interview artefact than a screenshot of a platform dashboard.

Practice Turn your campaign into a one-page report and present it to one person in five minutes.

Graduates from any stream, small-business owners, and anyone already posting for a college club, a family shop or their own page who wants to do it with numbers instead of guesses.

What you will be able to do at the end

  • Write a one-page marketing plan for a real product, with a named audience and one measurable goal
  • Set up and read Google Analytics 4: where visitors came from and what they did
  • Do keyword research and write a page that targets one honest search phrase
  • Run a small paid campaign with a fixed budget and read cost-per-click and conversion
  • Write social content that is planned, not improvised, and know which post did what
  • Report the campaign in one page a business owner would understand

How the course is structured

4 modules and 12 lessons, arranged so each one ends with something you have built. Every lesson carries a worked example and a practice task โ€” the practice is the course, the reading is only the setup. Plan for 6 weeks ยท about 6 hours a week.

The full syllabus โ€” every lesson, its example and its practice task โ€” is in the Course curriculum below. Nothing is locked and nothing needs an account.

Your weekly routine

  • Two 2-hour sessions a week: one concept, one thing shipped.
  • Thirty minutes weekly in analytics, reading your own numbers rather than reading about analytics.
  • One post-mortem a week in five lines: what ran, what it cost, what came back, what you would change.

What you will have built by the end

  • A one-page marketing plan with a named audience and a dated number
  • One published page targeting a real search phrase, with tagged promotion
  • A small ad test with cost per click, cost per conversion and a written recommendation

Where this leads for a fresher

  • Digital marketing executive (fresher)
  • Social media and content executive
  • SEO trainee
  • Marketing internships at agencies and small businesses

Titles vary between companies; the evidence does not. A deployed project, a set of queries you can explain, or a case study with real testing behind it is what a fresher interview has to work with.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn this without spending money on ads?

Most of it, yes. The coursework runs on free tools, and the ad module is designed around the smallest test that still answers a question โ€” a few hundred rupees, spent once, teaches more than any amount of reading about budgets.

Do I need a website of my own?

You need ONE page you control, plus a free analytics tag. A simple free blog is enough; the point is that you own the results and can read them.

Is this course free?

The lessons, examples and practice tasks are free. Only the optional ad test spends real money, and you decide that amount โ€” start it at the smallest number that still returns a result.

Which marketing jobs can I actually get as a fresher?

Executive and trainee roles at agencies and small businesses, where a campaign report you wrote yourself is worth more than a certificate. Take the free Career Pulse check to see how your profile scores against the roles you want.

Not sure which of these you need first? The free Career Pulse check scores your skills, communication and goal clarity in about three minutes and tells you which gap to close first. Take the free check.
